Flower Mound PD: Man plotted murder of man he blames for failed marriage

A man found last week behind a Flower Mound church with a bevy of guns and ammunition was planning to murder a man he blames for ruining his marriage, police say

A man found last week behind a Flower Mound church with a bevy of guns and ammunition was planning to murder a man he blames for ruining his marriage, police say.

Police found Robert Hulsey in his car behind a church in the 200 block of Flower Mound Road on Nov. 7. Officers had initially been called to a nearby shopping center around 7:40 a.m. in regards to a man wearing combat-style clothing and carrying two assault rifles.

Hulsey, 34, had allegedly been asking about a man who worked at a chiropractor clinic in the shopping center. During an interview with police, Hulsey said he believed the man caused his marriage to fail.

“When asked if he planned to kill [the man], [Hulsey] nodded in the affirmative and began to cry,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

Capt. Wess Griffin told WFAA considering the firepower the suspect had, it's possible a mass shooting was prevented.

"This reporting party saw something, and said something. Had they not, we might have found ourselves as the next municipality in a long list of municipalities that have had shootings," said Griffin.

Hulsey was in possession of four long rifles, over 400 rounds of ammunition, five loaded magazines, three knives, two daggers, handcuffs and a suitcase, according to police.

Two assault rifles in the passenger seat were loaded and the scope caps had been removed, the affidavit reads.

He was planning to carry out the initial murder when the clinic opened, according to police.

Flower Mound police released this list of items found in Hulsey’s SUV:

• 1 12-gauge shotgun
• 1 AR-15 long rifle
• 1 .22 long rifle
• 1 30.06 long rifle
• 100 rounds of 9 mm ammunition
• 60 rounds of .223 ammunition
• 80 rounds of shotgun ammunition (00 buckshot and slugs)
• over 200 rounds of .22 ammunition
• 3 loaded .22 caliber 30-round magazines
• 2 loaded .223 30-round magazines
• 3 folding knives
• 2 daggers
• 1 pair of handcuffs
• 3 handcuff keys
• 1 suitcase with clothes

Police said Hulsey had also sent text messages that “appeared to threaten [the man’s] life” the morning of the alleged murder attempt.

He has been charged with attempted murder and is cooperating with an investigation.
