Dallas police arrest suspect in triple murder case

Justin Pharez Smith, 21, was taken into custody early Sunday morning at a residence in Grand Prairie. Investigators said that after being questioned, Smith admitted to committing the crimes.
Dallas police have named Justin Pharez Smith as the suspect in a triple murder case on August 2, 2014.

DALLAS Police say they have arrested the man responsible for shooting and killing three people in South Dallas on Saturday.

Justin Pharez Smith, 21, was taken into custody early Sunday morning at a residence in Grand Prairie. Investigators said that after being questioned, Smith admitted to committing the crimes.

The shooting happened in the 2100 block of Wynell Street and was reported shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday. Police said two women and a man were found dead inside a small, one-bedroom home; a fourth person who was said to have encountered the suspect was wounded by gunfire and taken to Baylor University Medical Center for treatment.

The dead were identified as:

  • Demarcus Walton Black, 37
  • Tyteanna Lyahanee Brown Black, 21
  • Kimberly Montgomery Black, 36

Dallas police investigator Maj. Jeff Cotner said the death toll could have been even higher.

'We knew this early yesterday that we were very fortunate that the outcome was not worse,' he said. 'Potentially had Smith been able to fire his weapon in the manner in which he tried or certainly later on when he hit one of our witnesses with a car he was trying to take six lives.'

Bond for Smith, whose address was listed as Pine Bluff, Arkansas, was set at $1 million.
