DALLAS — A barbecue joint in Dallas suffered "significant damage" after it caught on fire Friday morning, according to fire officials.

Dallas Fire-Rescue told WFAA that firefighters responded to a 911 call at approximately 9:04 a.m Friday for a fire at the Baby Back Shak Restaurant, located at 1800 S. Akard St. When firefighters got to the restaurant, they found smoke coming from the building and started suppression efforts immediately.

DFR told WFAA the fire was put out by 9:26 a.m.

The cause of the fire was ruled an accident resulting from a smoker being used to prepare food before opening that day, DFR said. DFR said all employees of the business made it out safely, but the fire left "significant damage," burning off the roof directly over the kitchen area.

State Rep. Venton Jones, who represents the district where the restaurant resides, posted about the fire on X, formerly known as Twitter, Friday morning:

"I’m sad to hear that one of my favorite HD 100 BBQ restaurants, Baby Back Shak, caught on fire this morning. Please keep the owner, Clarence Cohens, and the whole Baby Back Shak crew in your thoughts and prayers as they recover."

A GoFundMe was started to assist Baby Back Shak with funds to offset the time they are closed, assist in employee payroll and help them rebuild. As of March 30, the GoFundMe raised $4,208 of its $20,000 goal.
