WFAA's Verify team nominated for James Beard award

The Verify team is a finalist for the best television segment, going up against PBS and New York City's ABC 7.
David Schechter and the Verify Road Trip team is taking five regular Texans, with real questions, on five different adventures to get some real answers!

Wolfgang Puck. Bobby Flay. WFAA Verify host David Schechter?

OK, so maybe David isn't a world-class chef or famous foodie (although you'll get your fill of #SweetDay pictures on his Instagram).

He and producer Chance Horner did get nominated for a James Beard award, the annual honors given out for excellence in cuisine, culinary writing and culinary education.

Along with awards like Outstanding Chef (won by Puck in 1991 and 1998) and Rising Star Chef (won by Flay in 1993), the Beard Foundation also hands out book and media awards.

Here's David's description of the team's entry, with links to the stories below.

Our submission was about looking for the truth in food issues. Credible Information about food can often lacking or contradictory and that leaves consumers with questions about what they’re eating.

These kinds of stories have proven to be the most popular stories Verify produces like... do hormones in milk lead to early puberty in girls? And is a gluten-free diet good for you?

Our entry also included a story about food deserts and the underlying social problems and government policies that help create them.

Verify: Why do so many people lack access to fresh food?

Verify: The rise of gluten-free

The award winners will be announced on April 27 at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City.
