Rowlett homes evacuated after World War II-era mortar found

The Garland bomb squad was called to the 4600 block of Bayonne Drive in Rowlett about 11 a.m., police said.

Police evacuated homes in a Rowlett neighborhood and a part of the Bush Turnpike was closed after a report that a World War II-era mortar was found in the area.

The Garland bomb squad was called to the 4600 block of Bayonne Drive in Rowlett at about 11 a.m., police said.

The mortar was found by a person in another city and was driven to the Rowlett neighborhood, where the person called police.

Officers took the device to an empty lot, dug a three-foot hole and blew the live round up.

The evacuation orders have been lifted and the road has reopened.

No injuries were reported.
