Demolition of Valley View Mall gets restart

Legal setbacks forced the redevelopment of Dallas Midtown to stall for a year. Now that things have settled, demolition can continue again on the mall that opened in the 1970s.

DALLAS — Work has continued on the demolition of Valley View Mall in Dallas.

Scott Beck of Beck Ventures confirmed to WFAA Wednesday afternoon that all legal issues have been settled and the project is moving again after a one-year stall.

Beck said that the plans for the 70-acre parcel bring massive potential to the Dallas Midtown area. Beck has partnered with Life Time to offer a village based on healthy living.

"A healthy way of living village anchored by the new Life Time Athletic and Life Time Village concept," Beck said.

It is a place where Beck said people will be able to live, work and play. It also includes a 20-acre park on the south side of the development.

It took about seven years to finalize all the land deals, and one year to work through the legal issues with an adjacent property owner and the city of Dallas.

"It takes a long time to put this together," Beck said.

But finally, he said, the legal issues are behind them and now the demolition can restart. It will take about six weeks to fully tear down the old J. C. Penney building and about six months to tear down the entire mall.

"A third of the population lives within 3.5 miles of this location," Beck said.

He said that fraction accounts for about 400,000 people. He envisions those people being consumers of Dallas Midtown.

Life Time sent out the following release on the project:

"As the Healthy Way of Life company, Life Time stands in a category of its own with a 27-year history of delivering comprehensive health, lifestyle and entertainment resorts that now are located in 28 states and 39 major markets in the US and Canada. Within the overall mixed-use retail, office, hotel and housing vision for Dallas Midtown, it would be fine to mention that Life Time is extending its brand with the development of not only one of its category redefining Life Time Athletic resorts as part of the project, but also, its Life Time Work and Life Time Living office and residential developments, which bring Life Time’s Healthy Way of Life philosophy to beautiful, luxury designed work and living spaces that give birth and new meaning to how consumers can live, work, be healthy and active, socialize and play.
