THE COLONY, Texas -- An officer-involved shooting that left a burglary suspect dead is under investigation.
Police officers were dispatched to a home in the 5500 Rice Street, near North Colony Boulevard, at about 6 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a 911 call for a burglary in progress.
"What we heard when we were outside is the neighbors coming screaming that somebody was inside their house," said Glenda Sanchez, who lives nearby.
Neighbors told WFAA a man had broken through the back door of the home and grabbed a knife while a mother and daughter were inside.
When police arrived, they said the suspect pulled the knife, and officers shot him, fearing for their lives.
Relatives of Shaquille Rogers, 24, confirmed that he is the man who died. They said he has a newborn baby.
Police initially said two suspects were inside the home, but later said they were not sure a second suspect was involved, only that officers saw another person who appeared to be running from the scene.
The Texas Rangers have been asked to investigate. They said the investigation is ongoing and had no further comment.
According to a Colony Police spokesman, this is the first fatal officer-involved shooting he can remember in The Colony in the last 27 years.
