Telescopes likely ruined after storms batter UNT astronomy observatories

The roofs of three observatories were ripped off during the storm Wednesday

DENTON, Texas — This was supposed to be a big weekend at UNT's Rafes Urban Astronomy Center, known for its retractable roofs and incredible telescopes. They were to hold a stargazing party Saturday, the first in months thanks to rain-outs.

"We were getting phone calls off the wall," said Ron DiIulio, director of UNT's astronomy program, adding hundreds planned to attend.

Instead, they'll spend the weekend cleaning up for a party that won't happen. Storms Wednesday night ripped the retractable roofs right off three of the observatories, sending them into neighboring fields.

"I was shocked when I drove up and saw the roofs open—and not only were they open, they were missing," said Preston Starr, the aptly named observatory superintendent.

Starr says not only are the roofs wrecked, but the telescopes are soaked too-- and likely ruined.

"The telescopes are very expensive," he said. "We’re probably talking at least a couple hundred thousand dollars in damage."

"We are officially closed until further notice," said DiIulio, who's better known on campus as "Starman." He says UNT's astronomy program is the biggest in Texas.

He calls the damage a kick to the gut, but he's touched by the support.

"I've already received emails from folks saying 'I'm an astronomer but I've got gloves and I'm ready to help you in whatever way I can,'" DiIulio said.

There's no telling when they'll be back in business, or how much it'll cost to rebuild the observatories. They're having to bring portable telescopes in for students to use.

"It's shocking, but the best thing about it, no one was hurt nobody was here," Starr said. "The equipment can be replaced, and I think it'll be better next time around."

An astronomer who looks for the bright side.
