Doing the 'hail dance': Dealership hustles to protect cars with hail in the forecast

Will Churchill, who owns Frank Kent Cadillac, says the dealership will protect hundreds of vehicles before the storms roll in

FORT WORTH, Texas — As the skies change from Tuesday into Wednesday and the clouds swirl and the wind whips, Will Churchill will be watching closely.

"There's nothing enjoyable about it," he said. "You kinda get a little knot in your stomach."

The owner of Frank Kent Cadillac in west Fort Worth says he has 400 vehicles for sale out on his lot, plus another 100-plus customer vehicles that are being serviced. Those are vehicles he says he doesn't want to become sitting ducks, should the predicted hail storm hit.

So starting Tuesday afternoon, they'll be moving every single vehicle under cover, taking special care to bring customer cars indoors. The showroom will be packed to the gills, every space under the hail tents will be taken and cars will be put into the service lifts, with other cars below them.

It's a precaution Chris Pilcic with State Farm says you should take, too.

"The biggest thing you can do right now before the storm hits is to be prepared," Pilcic said, "whether that's taking precautions to put your car and belongings under cover or calling your insurance company to review your policy."

Hailstorms like the one we saw in North Texas last month can cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. State Farm says in 2018, they paid Texans $90 million for hail damage to their cars alone.

"We had thousands of customers report damage to cars and homes," he said.

Rental car companies told WFAA they often see a demand on rental cars in the days after hail storms.

"We call this the hail dance," Churchill said of the moving of vehicles. "We’ve done it a couple times for naught, but this one has a much different feel to it."

It's a much different kind of Texas two-step.

"We have a good team, we execute a plan and the rest is in the hands of mother nature," he said.
