ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy appeared in court Friday morning, where his attorney argued that there was a lack of evidence in the case.

Jeudy was arrested Thursday and was in custody at the Arapahoe County Detention Center. During the hearing, he was granted a $1,500 personal recognizance bond and was released from custody later Friday.

After his release, Jeudy made it the couple yards or so over to Broncos' headquarters and sat down with head coach Nathaniel Hackett.

“I had an opportunity to talk with Jerry, and we’re going to move forward from this,'' Hackett said following the team's rookie minicamp practice. "We’re going to learn from it as a team. That’s what it’s all about. There’s adversity, and it’s how we respond from that adversity. So I think that’s so important. Things happen, and we just have to learn from them.”

No plea was entered in the courtroom with Jeudy's next hearing set for May 31.

"Sometimes bad things happen to good people,'' Jeudy's attorney Harvey Steinberg said as he addressed the media outside Judge Chantel Contiguglia 's courtroom after the hearing. "That's what this case is. I don't think he should have been arrested. I don't think he should have been incarcerated.''

Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched around 10:15 a.m. Thursday after a woman called 911 for a "keep the peace " call, said Sheriff Tyler Brown.

Jeudy was taken into custody without incident between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, and he was cooperative with deputies, Brown said.

He was held on a misdemeanor charge of second-degree criminal tampering, with a domestic violence enhancer.

Brown said the woman reported Jeudy locked her wallet, a car seat and their child's medical papers in his car and would not give her access. She told deputies she was trying to leave the home and wanted her property back, which he would not give her access to, according to Brown.

The victim spoke in court Friday. She said she did not consider Jeudy a threat and reported there was no physical contact. She said she wanted the charges dismissed and only called police to have the situation monitored.

Jeudy was not accused of committing any physical violence, and the domestic violence enhancer was added because he has an intimate relationship and shares a child with the woman who called 911, according to Brown. The 1-month-old child was present during the incident, he said.

Asked about Jeudy withholding the baby's property, Steinberg said: "I'm not convinced it's the baby's property. He's the father of the child and I  know from time to time you wanted to take your child somewhere and in order to do that you take the child's property with you, don't you?"

The crime Jeudy was accused of is a low-level misdemeanor, according to Brown, but he said the sheriff's office treats all cases involving domestic violence seriously.

A temporary protection order was put in place preventing all parties from making contact with each other, which Brown said was standard in domestic violence cases.

However, in court Friday, the victim said she was not seeking a non-contact order, and the judge ruled she and Jeudy could have contact. The judge also gave Jeudy permission to travel.

The Broncos released a short statement Thursday regarding the arrest.

"We are aware of the matter involving Jerry Jeudy and are in the process of gathering more information,'' the statement said.

Jeudy was the Broncos' first-round draft pick, No. 15 overall, in the 2020 NFL Draft. He had 52 catches for 856 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie. After an encouraging offseason, training camp and preseason last year, Jeudy suffered a high ankle sprain in the Broncos' season-opener at the New York Giants and was sidelined the next seven games. He returned for the final nine games and finished with 38 catches for 467 yards and zero touchdowns.
