It's time again for the State Fair of Texas! Before you visit Big Tex and grab that corny dog, check out WFAA's guide to help you make the most of your trip.
WHEN TO GO
The State Fair will begin Sept. 25 and end on Oct. 18 at Dallas' Fair Park. Gates open at 7 a.m. The fair and exhibits are open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and the Midway is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
HOW TO GET THERE
The Fair Park parking lot is $15, but fair-goers are encouraged to ride the DART rail. There is a DART station right outside the front gate of Fair Park.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
General admission is $18. Tickets are $16.50 if you buy from Kroger. Season passes can be bought for $39.95. A season pass from Kroger is $34.95.
Children get in for $14, and kids under the age of 2 are free. Senior tickets are $14.
Groups of 20 people or more can save 30% on advanced tickets.
WHAT CAN I BRING?
Fair officials are banning selfie sticks this year, but coolers aren't prohibited. See our story below and go here to see a list of allowed items.
ON THE CHEAP
There are many opportunities to enjoy the fair without going broke.
ANY DAY: If you bring an empty Dr Pepper can to the fair after 5 p.m., admission will be half price.
You can also bring a cooler into the fair, so you can save money by bringing your own drinks and food (sorry, no alcohol allowed).
Get coupons at McDonald's restaurants across North Texas to get $5 off admission. The coupons also take half off children's tickets with a purchase of a general admission ticket on certain days.
TUESDAY: If you bring an empty can of Dr Pepper can on a Tuesday, you'll get in for only $5! You will also be able to ride certain rides for only six coupons.
WEDNESDAY: If you bring four cans of food to donate to the North Texas Food Bank, you can get in for $4.
THURSDAY:Seniors can attend the fair for free on Thursdays (Oct. 1, 8 and 15).
For the first time this year, the fair is offering Thrifty Thursdays, where food vendors will be offering signature dishes at a reduced price.
FRIDAY: Get $5 off admission when you download and print a coupon off KISS-FM's website.
Laura Thornquist has more ideas on how to save money at the fair:
Hoping to try all the new fried food this year? The Fried Carrot Cake won the Big Tex Choice Award for "Best Taste" and the Smoky Bacon Margarita won for "Most Creative."
Pro tip: Go with a big group of friends, have everyone purchase 1-2 food dishes. Then share!
The State Fair brings new artists and favorite musicians alike to its numerous stages. This year the Beach Boys will be in town! Don't forget to check out the fair's newest attraction, the ZuZu African Acrobats!
Unfortunately, this will be the last year we see butter sculptures by Sharon BuMann.
