Williams Chicken workers deliver lunch to TSA staffers affected by government shutdown

Some local businesses are stepping up to help furloughed government workers at the Dallas Love Field airport.

DALLAS — Some local businesses are stepping up to help furloughed government workers at the Dallas Love Field airport. They are providing lunch and dinner to staff with the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA.

Workers were busy in the kitchen at Williams Chicken near Fair Park. The staff was on special assignment early Tuesday morning.

"We're answering a call from the City of Dallas," Toska Medlock Lee said. Lee is the Williams Chicken marketing and communications director.

The restaurant staff was busy preparing and packing 150 meals.

“We’re going to give them a 2-piece mixed with a pepper and a small mashed potatoes,” said the restaurant’s manager.

The meals were delivered to TSA workers at Dallas Love Field.

“We always try to give back to the community as much as we can,” the manager said.

The TSA workers, like thousands of federal employees, have been on the job for weeks without pay during the partial government shutdown.

Lee explained, ”For those workers to have to work and not know when or if they are going to get paid, the least we can do as a company and as a corporation is to provide a meal that they can be sure to have.”

The team at Williams Chicken said the restaurant is proud to be able to help the TSA workers.

Staffers from the City of Dallas and Dallas Aviation services have been reaching out to local businesses, asking them to provide lunch and dinner services during some TSA shifts. They’re hoping it will provide a little relief for those federal workers who are experiencing some stressful and uncertain times.

Chris Perry with Dallas Love Field Airport said, “We certainly appreciate what they are doing. Keeping the airports safe, and keeping the checkpoint moving as you can see behind me during these busy travel times.”

The Williams Chicken staff said providing lunch is a small gesture. They say it’s all about service and giving back.

Several restaurants and community partners have signed up to continue bringing food to TSA workers throughout the week. City staffers says they are determined to continue doing everything possible until this shutdown is over.
