VIDEO: Grapevine officer stops drunk driver cruising through oncoming traffic

A Grapevine man now faces a DWI charge after an officer stopped him while driving through oncoming traffic on Highway 26 last week.

GRAPEVINE, Texas — A Grapevine man now faces a DWI charge after an officer stopped him while driving through oncoming traffic on Highway 26 last week.

The incident was captured on the officer’s dash camera.

In it, you see her driving on patrol and then several cars ahead of her start swerving out of the way.

A car driving in the opposite direction on Highway 26 can then be seen heading towards the officer in her lane.

The video shows her angling her patrol vehicle to block the lane, and then getting out to stop the driver.

According to court records, 25-year-old Jose Alvarenga was arrested at the scene and charged with DWI.

Grapevine Police Spokesperson Amanda McNew says the officer’s timing couldn’t have been better. If she hadn’t been there, things could have gone much worse.

“A few more seconds and someone could have hit that car head-on,” McNew said.

McNew says that the video is a good reminder to find a sober ride if you’re drinking, especially with July 4th around the corner.

So far this year, McNew says Grapevine has seen a 16 percent increase in DWI arrests compared to this time last year.
