FORT WORTH, Texas — Charges have been filed against a Kansas man for shipping a package of freshwater stingrays and Boulengerella to DFW International Airport, with plans to later take the animals back to Kansas by driving a vehicle, according to Texas Game Warden officials

The stingrays and Boulengerella (a freshwater fish native to South America) are both on Texas' invasive species list, making them illegal to own in the state of Texas. They are also illegal to own in Oklahoma.

The animals were found packaged in bags of water, set between bunches of newspaper in a shipping crate. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife inspector at the airport who found them promptly called the local game warden.

All of the animals were still alive, but due to the potential harm they could cause, they were euthanized and kept for evidence, officials said.
