Ring home security system posts on social media to alert others of crime suspects

Just this year, Ring has started to push wanted posters in a handful of cities across the country, including in Dallas.

DALLAS -- Like so many of us, Richelle Cox isn't home when her Amazon packages are delivered. The difference is she's the one delivering them.

Two weeks ago, Cox was on the job when she got an alert from her video doorbell at her house in South Oak Cliff.

“I was like, 'What is she doing? like 'Oh my God, is she really stealing my packages,'” Cox said.

Cox watched a woman wearing dark sunglasses steal a package from her front porch. Five minutes later, a man comes by for package number two.

“Oh my god, it really upset me because it invaded my privacy. That’s my home,” Cox said.

What happened next surprised her. The manufacturer of her doorbell, Ring, produced this video and blasted across social media.

It's been viewed more than 21,000 times -- complete with a Dallas police case number.

“We started with the mission of reducing crime in neighborhoods and that’s what really important,” said Mark Troughton with Ring, a home security company based in California.

Just this year, his company has started to push wanted posters in a handful of cities across the country, including in Dallas. Anywhere between 50-100 posts a week that they claim leads to about three or four arrests a week.

Dallas police say they have not entered into an official partnership with Ring but do say that video surveillance continues to be a tremendous crime-fighting tool.

“This isn’t really about a ring commercial. It’s really about building a neighborhood watch that has real teeth that’s really reducing crimes in neighborhoods,” Troughton said.

In some cases, Ring is even paying to boost the posts to make sure they reach a larger audience.
Sure, it's a commercial for their doorbell, but it's also a way to catch thieves who have already been caught red-handed.

“I just want people to understand that you can’t just go on people’s property and take something that doesn’t belong to you, and think you’re going to get away with it, eventually you’re going to get caught,” Cox said.

And Cox hopes that you will take a good look at these two -- a picture that Ring is happy to help spread.
