Midlothian student graduates with perfect attendance

Tyler is no ordinary high school student. In 13 years from kindergarten through his senior year, Tyler never missed a day.

Like many others, Tyler Walker is about to graduate from high school. He's got 13 years of memories showcased throughout his house from track ribbons to academic certificates.

Tyler is no ordinary high school student. In 13 years from kindergarten through his senior year, Tyler never missed a day.

"Two-thousand days of full school days. It's crazy," Tyler said.

Tyler learned discipline from his parents who are both Dallas police officers, Sr. Cpl.'s Shemika and Greg Rodriguez.

"Basically, I just want him to do his best and sometimes as a parent when you see your child do something, you just want them to do better and you want to push them to excel,” said Cpl. Greg Rodriguez.

For many years Tyler’s parents were out in patrol working late shifts, overtime and off-duty jobs. No matter what was happening on the streets even as the department mourned the murders of five officers on July 7, they always made sure Tyler got to school.

"I just wanted him to succeed in life, if you want to do something in life. I have to get up and go to work you have to go school,” said Sr. Cpl. Shemika Rodriguez.

Tyler is graduating from Midlothian Heritage High School with good grades. He’s a track star and homecoming king.

He's also only one of two students in the entire district graduating with perfect attendance. "I am so happy that I finally did it and stuff and it was amazing,” said Tyler Rodriguez.

What's even more incredible is the officers have two more children in elementary school and both of them also have perfect attendance.

They say it's a testament that if you’re willing to work hard, you can achieve anything.
