Crane hits pedestrian bridge in El Paso, portion collapses onto vehicles

According to the Texas Depart of Transportation, an excavator truck struck a pedestrian bridge and knocked a "considerable amount" of debris on the highway.

A portion of a bridge collapsed onto vehicles on U.S. 54 South in Northeast El Paso after an excavator truck with a crane struck it Tuesday, officials said.

According to the Texas Depart of Transportation, an excavator truck struck a pedestrian bridge and knocked a "considerable amount" of debris on the highway.

El Paso Police Department officials said a crane struck a structure on U.S. 54 South near Hercules Avenue before 11:30 a.m., which caused part of the structure to land on vehicles in the area.

Officials have not said how many vehicles were struck nor whether any injuries were reported.

TxDOT crews are currently working to clear the roadway. U.S. 54 South near Hercules Avenue has been closed to traffic.

No other information has been released.
