ARLINGTON -- The Texas Rangers, Major League Baseball, and the City of Arlington announced they are expanding their plans for the “Texas Live!” entertainment district, which will cost $50 million more than originally projected.

“The retail and entertainment portion, which was announced at 100,000 square feet, has been doubled in size,” said Blake Cordish of The Cordish Companies, which is developing the project for the team. “We had previously planned on the hotel and convention center development to be in the second phase. We decided it should be moved up to the first phase.”

The first phase will cost $250 million and will be paid for by the Rangers and Cordish. The City is contributing an additional $50 million for the project to fund items such as infrastructure improvement, among other things.

Cordish said construction would begin at the end of this baseball season and with a projected opening in spring of 2018. The hotel, he said, would take a longer to build and open in fall of 2018.

As this development is underway, the team and city are asking voters to shift a half-cent sales tax from the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium to help pay for a new ballpark for Rangers.

Ray Davis, co-chairman & managing partner of the Texas Rangers told WFAA that the outcome of the November stadium vote would not impact the development of “Texas Live!”

The team, league, and city announced “Texas Live!” will have three venues anchoring the entertainment district.

The first, Rangers Republic, is a two-level venue with multiple restaurants and providing interactive games and authentic memorabilia.

Live! Arena is a multi-level venue providing restaurants, a performance stage for concerts, and an outdoor beer garden.

Finally, Arlington Backyard, the third venue to anchor the entertainment district, will be a large, covered venue that could host concerts, charitable functions, and community events.

The city said the expanded project means it will be able to host both more conventions and larger events. The city added that “Texas Live!” will be an economic engine, providing several thousand jobs, both temporary and permanent.

“While solutions are still being discussed and developed, initial ideas include transforming Globe Life Park into one of the premiere entertainment, retail, office, and festival sites in the United States,” the team said in a statement announcing the expansion.

Cordish told WFAA that planning for the repurposing of the interior of Globe Life Park has not yet begun.
