Evacuation over at Irving school after report of gas odor

Hazmat crews are investigating the leak at 1600 Finley Road, near Travis Middle School.

IRVING -- Fire officials in Irving evacuated a middle school Wednesday morning due to a possible gas leak.

Hazmat crews investigated the potential leak at 1600 Finley Road, near Travis Middle School.

"Someone reported a strong odor in the building and as a precaution we have the students out on the football field while the fire department checks it out," Tierney Tinnin with Irving ISD said. "District PD is there just to offer some support and help monitor."

Tinnin added that parents were notified.

After about an hour, the students were allowed to go back inside when crews deemed the building safe. There was no leak, officials said, but they commended school officials for their quick-thinking.
