One person is dead after a fiery wrong-way collision with an 18-wheeler Sunday morning in DeSoto.

Police said a driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35E just after 5 a.m. when the vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was able to escape after the truck jackknifed and caught fire, police said. The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hazmat crews and the medical examiner were on the scene after the crash. Images captured by News 8 showed DeSoto firefighters extinguishing flames on the charred semi truck.

Southbound lanes of I-35E near Danieldale were closed for nearly 12 hours in the wake of the crash. All lanes had reopened by around 4:30 p.m.

The victim’s identity had not yet been released.
