Dallas Cowboys fever is alive and strong. Fans have nothing to complain about right now, and critics of the team who once deemed the season a lost cause early on last year are eating their words.
And yes, that includes 7-year-old Rylan Wood. “I’m kind of crushing them actually as we’re on this win streak,” Wood said.
Wood is a second grader from Mansfield whose letter to Jerry Jones went viral in November. After the Cowboys lost to the Titans in primetime, solidifying a measly 3-5 record, Wood told his mom that he wanted to write a letter to Jerry Jones to vent his frustrations.
So, how does one begin a letter to the billionaire owner of America’s Team? Wood started off mentioning that he and his mother are die-hard fans.
When he was less than a year old, Wood had a seizure and had to be sent to Cook Children’s. There, he met several Cowboys players like Demarcus Ware. He’s even met Ezekiel Elliott after attending a camp he hosted.
Then, he let Jones have it. In squiggly handwriting, Wood told Jones that he is to blame for his mom’s frustrations. “You have made my mom very mad because WE SUCK,” the letter reads. “Every game she is yelling at the TV and turns off the game.”
He took a nice shot at head coach Jason Garrett for one of his well-known sideline habits saying, “I hope Coach Garrett is clapping if this letter gets to you.”
Wood then decided to tell Jones that things might be better off with the team if Dez Bryant hadn’t left. “See what happens when Dez X is gone?” Wood wrote.
Not only that, Wood also suggested that the cheerleaders are the only thing good about the Cowboys this season.
“The cheerleaders are better than the team this year,” the letter said.
But of course, Wood is a fan, and didn’t want to burn a bridge so he wrote, “I do not want to hurt your feelings.”
Now, that’s just adorable and hilarious.
WFAA found the letter after Wood’s mom posted it to Facebook. Once the story ran, it was shared across Cowboys Nation.
“It was on Sports Center, NFL Network, CNN, I mean so many people saw it,” mother Kayla Jimenez said. “There’s no way the team hasn’t seen it.”
But did Jerry see it? No comment from the Cowboys, but Wood seems to think so. “I think Jerry Jones got it but didn’t respond,” Wood said.
Hey, guess who did respond though…the Cowboys! Wood thinks his letter ‘woke’ the team up.
After writing it, the team won 7 of their next 8 games. They even beat the Seahawks, securing their first playoff win since 2015. “I think I woke them up a lot,” Wood said. “I don’t think we suck that much now.”
Wood, as any 7-year-old would, now takes credit for the Cowboys turnaround success.
I mean, he did say what we all were thinking and sometimes pro athletes (owners too) need tough love. “They needed a lot of it,” Wood said.
Oh, and Mr. Jones, if you’re reading this…here’s your apology and a hot take for the game this weekend.
“The Rams are good, but I already know that we’re going to beat them.”
