Investigation underway after officer-involved shooting in Greenville

An investigation into the shooting is underway.

GREENVILLE, Texas -- What began as a routine traffic stop by DPS troopers on I-30 turned into a crime scene after officers reported “shots fired” to dispatchers Tuesday evening.

Lonny Haschel with Texas DPS says at some point, the trooper had probable cause to initiate further investigation into a possible DWI. While the trooper was with the suspect, the suspect got back to the vehicle and attempted to drive off.

Haschel told WFAA that somehow the trooper was connected to the SUV driven by the suspect. The trooper was "dragged" for nearly 100 yards along Interstate-30.

Haschel then said the trooper fired his weapon at the driver. The driver crashed the vehicle into the median forcing the airbags to deploy and the vehicle to come to a stop.

Haschel says the driver then attempted to flee on foot across lanes of I-30. The trooper gave chase and arrested the suspect.

The trooper and the suspect both sustained injuries. Haschel says the injuries to both men are non-life-threatening.

An investigation by the Texas Rangers is underway.
