Local physician, diver gives insight on team stranded in cave

It's now a race against Father Time and Mother Nature for a Thailand soccer team stranded in a cave.

As of Sunday night, four children have been rescued and nine still remain, including their coach.

WFAA met with Dr. Renie Guilliod, the medical director of Hyperbaric Medicine at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine. But on Sunday he mostly spoke as an accomplished diver with experience in deep diving, commercial diving, and even cave diving.

He says the divers called in to rescue the soccer team in Thailand are highly specialized, highly technical people.

"It is a very select group that not only requires a special personality and extremely high level of training," Dr. Guilliod said.

He has been in contact with the Thai Navy and even offered his expertise through letters with the operations director.

"They are working in an environment that doesn't have good ventilation," he said.

He says the lack of oxygen and the high levels of carbon dioxide in the caves are harmful. But he's ultimately impressed with the operation and believes the decisions are best left to the people on the ground.

Dr. Guilliod's specialty is part of a partnership between Texas Health Resources and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

"We increase the amount of oxygen dissolved in the plasma and also in the tissue," he said.

In the hyperbaric chamber, a diver can be treated for issues in deep water, such as decompression sickness. But he says the majority of the patients who use the hyperbaric chamber are using it for reasons outside of diving.

His hope is the children are out as soon as possible. The oncoming rains mean more flooding and more worry around the world for the children and their coach.
