LIST: Numerous North Texas school districts extend closures over COVID-19 concerns

District officials at DeSoto and Lancaster also say they will close schools indefinitely following advice from health officials.

This story will be continuously updated as new closures and cancellations are announced.

Numerous school districts across North Texas have extended closures or said they are closing schools indefinitely in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

On Monday, the Dallas and Richardson schools districts were the first to announce an indefinite closure, but they were followed by a number of others.

DISD officials said they made this decision based on advice from Dallas County Health and Human Services.

Here's a look at more closures:

Allen ISD

Allen ISD will extend its closure through April 3. All meetings, campus events, practices, and extracurricular activities are suspended. This includes Kids Club.

Alvarado ISD 

Alvarado Independent School District will remain closed through March 29, extending spring break one week. 

The school initially closed over concerns of COVID-19 exposure for an individual with students who attended AISD. However officials said Friday that the entire family had tested negative for COVID-19.

Ambleside School of Dallas/Fort Worth

Ambleside will be closed until March 20.

Anna ISD

Anna ISD announced it was extending spring break one week. The school will remain closed through March 20.

Arlington ISD

Arlington ISD says they will be closed until March 30 at all 78 of their schools/campuses.

"We're in an unprecedented situation that requires us to take unprecedented action." 

In addition to classes, all school-related events are also canceled, including athletics, fine arts activities, clubs and organizations.

Essential administrative employees will continue to work, many of them remotely.

The district said it is working on a plan that student have access to meals and snacks, and continue learning. That plan is still in progress.

Azle ISD

Spring break will be extended through April 3, the district has announced.

Birdville ISD

Birdville ISD has extended its spring break and will be closed March 16 to 27.

Blue Ridge ISD

Blue Ridge ISD says it will extend its spring break an extra week, through March 20.

Carroll ISD

Carroll ISD has announced it will be closed from March 16 to March 27.

Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD

All Carrollton-Farmers Branch schools will be closed until March 20. All campus events, field trips, student trips and UIL practices and competitions are canceled until further notice.

Cedar Hill ISD

Cedar Hill ISD announced on March 16 that it was closing indefinitely. 

On Friday, Cedar Hill ISD said it would be offering sack breakfasts and sack lunches at four locations to anyone under the age of 18.

Those locations are: 

  • Plummer Elementary (Door #3)
  • High Pointe Elementary (Door #1)
  • Bessie Coleman Middle School (Door #15)
  • Cedar Hill HS (Door #12)

Breakfast will be available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. These sack meals will be served on weekdays while the district is closed.

Celina ISD

Celina ISD will remain closed March 16 to March 20.

Cleburne ISD

Schools in Cleburne ISD will close beginning March 23 and classes will resume on March 30.

Community ISD

Community ISD will remain closed March 16 to 20.

Coppell ISD

The Coppell Independent School District will close through April 3. Extracurricular activities and school events are also canceled during that period.

Staff will also be working to support students who rely on school services during the closure. 

Crowley ISD

Crowley ISD will close for two weeks, extending spring break from March 16 to March 27. All other school activities are also canceled.

Country Day School of Arlington

The school has extended its spring break through March 20.

Dallas ISD

On March 16, DISD said it was closing all schools indefinitely to slow the spread of the disease, based on advice from Dallas County Health and Human Services.

Teachers are working to start distance learning and are coming up with a plan to distribute meals at a number of campus locations.

Decatur ISD

Decatur ISD will close all schools and facilities the week after spring break, from March 23 to March 29

Denton ISD

Denton ISD announced it will be closed from March 16 to March 22. 

DeSoto ISD

Desoto ISD has announced it will close indefinitely. The district has instituted plans for at-home learning, which teachers will lead, and for distributing meals at select locations.

Duncanville ISD

Duncanville ISD says it has extended spring break a second week and schools will now be closed from March 16 to March 27.

Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD

Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD has announced it will be closed from March 16 to March 27.

Ennis ISD

Ennis ISD will extend spring break through next March 20.

Everman ISD

Everman ISD will be closed from March 16 to March 27.

Fort Worth ISD

Fort Worth ISD announced Friday that they would be extending spring break for at least two weeks, until March 30 at least.

In addition, the district said it was canceling all travel, for students and employees, as well as school-related events.

The district said they are working to come up with alternative meal options for students who rely on schools for food.

Superintendent Kent P. Scribner said the district consulted Tarrant County Public Health, community leaders and other superintendents in making the decision.

Frisco ISD

Frisco ISD will extend its closure until April 3.

During this time, all district events and competitions will be considered canceled until further notice.

Garland ISD says it will remain closed through April 3. The district has also canceled all meetings, events, practices and extracurricular activities for that same week. 

Grand Prairie ISD

Grand Prairie ISD announced it is closing indefinitely. 

The district says they're taking this step because of the potential of community transmission in Dallas County.

Great Hearts Academies

Great Hearts Academies will extend spring break through March 20. Classes are expected to resume on March 23.

Grapevine-Colleyville ISD

GCISD has said it will close March 16 to 27 in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All school activities and events are canceled during that period.

The school district will reassess the situation at the end of that period and is working to support students who rely on school services.

Harmony Public Schools

The charter school network announced that its campuses in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Waco area would be shut down until Monday, March 30. All school activities and events in that time frame have been canceled. 

Hurst Euless Bedford ISD

HEB ISD will be closed until March 28, the district announced Friday. That extends spring break two weeks.

UIL events, extracurricular activities and schools events will be canceled during the same period. 

The district said it would reassess the situation at the end of the extended break to determine any other actions.

The district is still making plans for how to provide meals and other support to students.

Employees may still need to work as requested during the closure, the district said.

Highland Park ISD

Highland Park ISD is closing for its regular spring break and plans to reopen on March 23.

IDEA Public Schools

IDEA Public Schools will extend spring break through March 27. School is expected to resume on March 30.

Irving ISD

Irving ISD says out of precaution spring break was extended through March 23. But the district has decided to also keep schools closed through Friday, April 3 to put a social distancing plan in place. 

Itasca ISD

Itasca ISD will remain closed at least through March 29.

Jean Massieu Academy

Jean Massieu Academy will be closed through March 27.

Kaufman ISD

Kaufman ISD announced it will be closed until April 3. 

Keller ISD

Keller ISD has announced it will close March 16 through March 27, which includes canceling all school activities and events.

The district's curriculum and instruction department will begin to deliver online digital content to PreK-12 students on Monday, March 23. 

The district will continue to provide box lunches to children in the community, ages 1-18 in a drive-through/curbside setup. It was held at five campuses Monday and fed nearly 1,000 children, officials said. The effort will be expanded to 11 total campuses on Tuesday, March 17.

Meals will be served curbside from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one for each child in the vehicle. 

The original five locations are:

Kennedale ISD

Kennedale ISD will close for two weeks, from March 16 to March 27.

Krum ISD

All schools and facilities in Krum ISD will be closed from March 16 to March 22.

Lancaster ISD 

Lancaster ISD has announced it is closed indefinitely.

Little Elm ISD

Little Elm ISD is extending its spring break a week and will closed March 16 to March 27.

Lovejoy ISD

Lovejoy ISD will extend its Spring Break by one week until March 20 and "will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation prior to reopening school on Monday, March 23, and will communicate across all channels as updated information becomes available," according to a Thursday statement.

During this extended Spring Break, district offices will be closed and all district events and competitions that have been scheduled within the district during this timeframe will be considered canceled until further notice. District travel for student competitions and events outside the district will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Mansfield ISD

The district is extending spring break two more weeks, from March 16 to March 27. All activities and travel is also canceled, the district said.

McKinney ISD

McKinney ISD will extend its closure through April 3. All meetings, campus events, practices, and extracurricular activities are also suspended.

Melissa ISD announced it will keeps its schools closed through April 24. School officials will communicate instructional plans to parents by March 20, including remote instructional support and alternatives for families without internet access.

Mesquite ISD

Mesquite ISD announced it has extended its spring break through March 20. The district will reassess at that time.

Northwest ISD

Northwest ISD said Friday that it will extend spring break two weeks, through March 27. All activities and events during this time have either been canceled or rescheduled.

Plano ISD

Plano ISD will be closed until April 3. All meetings, campus events, practices, and extracurricular activities are suspended.

During this extended Spring Break, district offices will be closed and all district events and competitions that have been scheduled within the district during this timeframe will be considered canceled until further notice. District travel for student competitions and events outside the district will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Princeton ISD 

Prosper ISD has said it will be closed through May 4. The district will begin online or home-based instruction March 23. 

Prosper ISD 

Prosper ISD has said it will be closed through March 20.

Richardson ISD

Richardson ISD officials said starting March 23, which was supposed to be the first day back from spring break, all of their schools will be closed indefinitely.

Beginning March 25, students will continue lessons at home. For third through eighth grades, they will study through devices issued by the district. All other students K-12 will be able to access lessons on the RISD website.

RISD is also working on a plan for providing food for students while schools are closed.

Rockwall ISD

Rockwall ISD has announced it extended its spring break through March 20. 

Sunnyvale ISD

Sunnyvale ISD officials say they have extended spring break to March 20.

Village Tech Schools in Duncanville

The superintendent of Village Tech Schools in Duncaville says Spring Break will be extended by one week -- March 16-20.  

Waxahachie ISD

Waxahachie ISD says it has extended its spring break until Monday, March 23. 

White Settlement ISD

White Settlement ISD says in addition to its spring break from March 16 to March 20, schools will be closed March 23 through April 3. 

Wylie ISD

Wylie ISD says it has extended it spring break through March 20.

Uplift Education charter schools

All locations in the charter school network will be closed indefinitely, officials announced on March 17.

Religious academies

  • Bishop Lynch High School has canceled in-person classes for Friday, March 13. Instead, the school will host an E-Day. In addition to classes, all school activities are canceled immediately, including any that were scheduled over Spring Break, officials say. 
  • Cistercian Preparatory School has canceled classes Thursday and Friday out of an abundance of caution, officials said in a letter. The closure includes extra-curricular and sports events. School officials will continue to monitor the situation throughout spring break and will notify parents with any new updates. 
  • Jesuit Dallas has moved to online learning for March 12-13
  • St. Rita Catholic School and Parish has canceled classes and masses for the rest of the week, with regular mass scheduled resuming March 14 and the entire school and church campus undergoing a CDC-guideline-consistent cleaning
  • Ursuline Academy of Dallas has moved to online learning for March 12-13
