Gov. Greg Abbott calls for statewide moment of silence for Santa Fe shooting victims

Abbott said he'll be hosting discussions this week with parents, school officials and other legislators to go over possible solutions to gun violence, including expediting background checks.

Gov. Greg Abbott has called for a statewide moment of silence at 10 a.m. Monday to honor the victims of the Sante Fe High School shooting, which left 10 people dead and more than 10 others injured Friday morning.

"The act of evil that occurred in Santa Fe has deeply touched the core of who we are as Texans," Abbott said in a statement Sunday. "In the midst of such tragedy, we pray for the victims and those mourning in Santa Fe, while we work to ensure swift and meaningful action to protect our students in schools across our state."

Abbott said he'll be hosting discussions this week with parents, school officials and other legislators to go over possible solutions to gun violence, including expediting background checks.

"We need to do more than just pray for the victims and their families,” Abbott said in a news conference Friday. “It's time in Texas that we take action to step up and make sure this tragedy is never repeated ever again.”
