DALLAS — Fred Fields can look at a shoe and see something entirely different from what most others see. His infatuation with shoes started at a very young age, but he always hated uniformity and didn't like it when shoes didn't match the clothes.

"I call it cooking. When people ask what I do, I say I'm cooking," Fields said.

From inside the little sunroom of his apartment in Dallas, he customizes shoes belonging to professional athletes. He cannot even remember how many shoes he's done for NFL players this season.

"I don't know. How many hours of sleep did I get?" he laughed.

His next shoe is for Rams defensive end Michael Brockers. Brockers will wear them Saturday against the Cowboys. Fred is doing all this in his Dallas apartment smack dab in enemy territory.

"You probably don't wanna go around telling people you're a Rams fan," he said.

Fields will be at Saturday's game along with the shoes that he made for the Rams player. "It's about creating something you can see, bringing it to life," he said.

What he creates is very hard to do -- almost like finding a Rams fan in Dallas.
