DALLAS — One person is dead and a fire department medic is in the hospital after a pick-up truck struck a Dallas Fire Rescue unit early Sunday morning.

The ambulance was responding to a call with lights and sirens at 3:15 a.m. when the collision occurred at the intersection of West Davis Street and North Westmoreland Road.

The driver of the pick-up truck and both medics inside the ambulance were taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The pick-up truck driver, 28 year-old Luis Cabrera, died from his injuries. The driver of the ambulance was expected to be released from the hospital after treatment of his injuries. His partner, who was sitting in the passenger side of the ambulance when it was struck, was admitted to the hospital for observation.

Investigators said Cabrera ran a red light at high speed just before the vehicles collided.
