DALLAS -- The man who opened fire on Dallas police last month, killing an officer, has been indicted on five felony charges by a grand jury, with prosecutors announcing they will seek the death penalty.

Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson held a press conference on Tuesday and said Armando Juarez had been indicted for capital murder, attempted capital murder, one count of aggravated assault, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant.

She said her team would be seeking the death penalty against Juarez for shooting and killing 27-year-old Dallas Police Officer Rogelio Santander.

Dallas Police Officer Rogelio Santander

He and his partner, Crystal Almeida, were called to a Northeast Dallas Home Depot store on April 24 for a shoplifting call.

Juarez, accused of trying to steal a drill, had a concealed weapon and fired at the officers, hitting both of them. A loss prevention officer at the store, Scott Painter, was also hit.

Officer Santander died the next day. Almeida and Painter were in critical condition but have since been released from the hospital.

Juarez was arrested during a violent chase with officers in a stolen truck, firing at them through the streets of Dallas.

Here's DA Johnson's statement in full:

Each and every day our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line so that we may enjoy the peace of mind that comes with safety and security. We are grateful for their commitment to duty and heartbroken for their loss.

After thoroughly reviewing the evidence and careful consideration, I have decided I will seek the death penalty against Armando Juarez for the Capital Murder of Officer Rogelio Santander.

We continue to pray for Officer Santander’s family, and for the continued recovery of Officer Crystal Almeida and loss prevention officer Scott Painter.

I want to thank the Grand Jury for their service and the entire Dallas Police Department for the hard work and dedication that they have put into this investigation, as well as the members of my staff who have also worked tirelessly to prepare for the Grand Jury.

We remain steadfast and diligent in our vigorous pursuit of justice in this case.
