BEDFORD -- Police in Bedford have arrested a junior high counselor after she allegedly had a "physical relationship" with a student.

On May 9, police learned of the allegations against Shannon Hathaway, a counselor at Harwood Junior High in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District.

Police believe Hathaway, 33, had a relationship with a former student during the 2016-2017 school year, when the student was 17 years old and in the 9th grade.

An arrest warrant was issued after an investigation, and Hathaway was charged with having an improper relationship between educator and student. She turned herself into the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office on June 14.

According to the Star-Telegram, Hathaway was placed on administrative leave back in May when the allegations came to light.

HEB ISD Superintendent Steve Chapman called it an isolated incident and described Hathaway as a "former" employee, the paper reported.

There's also no evidence that the behavior happened on campus, Chapman said.
