GRAND PRAIRIE -- Police are looking for a suspect they say opened fire on a uniformed, off-duty Fort Worth police officer who allegedly spotted the suspect breaking into a car.

At 3:20 a.m. on Saturday, the Fort Worth officer was heading into work in his personal vehicle when he saw the suspect breaking into the vehicle in the 3500 block of Sedona Drive.

The officer continued to drive down the road, then pulled to the side to call Grand Prairie 911 and report what he saw. However, once the officer stopped, the suspect got in his car, drove up, and confronted the officer.

The officer got out of his vehicle and identified himself as an officer. At that point, the suspect got back in his vehicle and began to drive away.

However, as the suspect drove away, he pulled out a handgun and fired at least two shots at the officer. The rounds struck the officer’s vehicle.

The officer returned fire at the fleeing suspect, and possibly hit the suspect vehicle’s driver door area or the rear of the vehicle.

Police have asked for the public’s help to identify the suspect. They released a composite sketch on Tuesday.

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a black Nissan Altima with light-tinted windows between model years 2004 and 2008.

The suspect himself is described as a Hispanic man in his early-to-mid 20s, standing 5-foot-7 and weighing 160-to-180 pounds. He has a short fade hairstyle and was wearing a white or grey short-sleeved shirt and dark pants at the time of the run-in with the officer.

Police would like to charge the suspect with attempted capital murder of a police officer. If you have any information, Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for info that leads to an arrest.

Tipsters can remain anonymous by calling (972) 988-8477.
