HOOKS, Texas — A 79-year-old felon was convicted to 18 months in federal prison after 119 firearms and more than 19,000 rounds of ammunition were discovered in his East Texas home.

In 2011, Robert D. Whittington III, of Hooks, Texas, was convicted on a felony of terrorizing in Louisiana.

According to court documents, Whittington was convicted on the terrorizing charge after he sent a threatening letter to a deer camp owner that said, “We comin [sic] after yo (obscenity) during deer season—when we can drop you like a deer! Right out of your stand․! We know now where you sit!”

With his felony conviction, Whittington, a 79-year-old retired U.S. Army colonel who has written several books on guns, was prohibited from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.

His home in Bowie County was searched on March 7, when the weapons and ammunition were seized.

The case was prosecuted as part of the Project Safe Neighborhood Initiative, which is aimed at reducing gun and gang violence and improving the safety of residents in the Eastern District of Texas. Participants in the initiative include community members, as well as federal, state and local law enforcement.
