Texas still has — by far — the most uninsured residents, but there's a special window open to get coverage or change existing coverage

More than 5.4 million Texans are uninsured.

TEXAS, USA — Recent data from QuoteWizard by LendingTree shows 22.7% of Texans have medical debt that has gone to collections. The median amount they owe is $1,068.

A big part of the problem: Lack of insurance.

Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington are in the top 10 most uninsured cities in the U.S., according to Sidecar Health, a company that partners with healthcare plan providers.

Statewide, Texas has worst-in-the-country numbers, too. According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 5,400,579 Texans are without medical coverage, creating an uninsured rate of 21.4%. The Texas Comptroller noted in a report that 56% of uninsured Texans are in families with at least one full-time worker.

But the latest pandemic relief approved by Congress and President Biden created a special enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act Marketplace. You can get coverage through Aug. 15. If you already have coverage, you can change plans. And you can possibly qualify for lower premiums.

Here's where you can apply.
