FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines plans to build a $100 million parts distribution center near Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, pending approval from the airport board.

The DFW Airport board will vote Thursday on whether to execute a 40-year lease with American Airlines Group Inc. for the 30-acre parcel of land on which the facility will be built, according to meeting documents. The 30 acres is located adjacent to American’s existing air freight facility at 1816 North Service Road.

The new facility is expected to be the central distribution location for all aircraft parts for American both at DFW and its domestic airports.

An American spokesperson said the company plans to break ground on the new facility this fall and its anticipated to increase operational reliability for the airline.

"This new facility will provide ample space to store parts which enables us to select parts up to 75 percent faster than we currently can, minimizing any potential maintenance delays," the spokesperson said.

If approved by the airport’s board, American will pay ground rent of $875,000 per year to occupy the parcel of land.

American Airlines is the largest tenant of DFW with more than 80 percent market share at the airport. The carrier’s more than 900 daily flights at DFW represents the second-largest airline hub behind Delta Air Lines' presence at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

"AA's $100 million capital investment in this new facility furthers its long-term commitment at DFW," said documents from the airport board meeting.

American will likely get access to more gates next decade when the airport completes construction of Terminal F, which is projected to have up to 24 gates.

American recently opened its new corporate headquarters just a few miles south of the airport in Fort Worth.
