Tax-free weekend might be over, but there are still ways you can save money

Families were expected to spend an average of $864 this year on back-to-school shopping, up $15 from last year.

HOUSTON — Texans were expected to save $112 million last weekend on back-to-school shopping during the 23rd annual tax-free weekend.

But, if you missed out, you still have some time to save.

The National Retail Federation said families were expected to spend an average of $864 this year during back-to-school shopping, up $15 from last year.

That's why many families choose to shop when it’s tax-free.

“I mean it speaks for itself: No taxes. And pretty much every kid is going to grow out of everything. So you have to do some shopping," shopper Chris Garcia said.

But, if you missed the big weekend, there are still ways to save. For starters, make a plan and stick to a budget. And if you can, buy in bulk. Also, do your research in-store and online. Find the best prices, and some places may even price match.

And while notebooks and pencils are necessities, some things can wait until the price is right. Experts said when it comes to things like backpacks, try to use last year's for the first few weeks and you may score a sale after Labor Day. The same holds true for electronics and cold weather clothes.

You also may want to wait and see what your kid really needs. For example, instead of buying five pairs of uniform pants, get a couple and make sure your kid likes them before going all in.
