Snowbaby: A healthy dessert for this hot weather

"Imagine if a snow cone and an ice cream had a baby--- it'd be a snowbaby."

If your little sweetie has a sweet tooth, you can relate to mom Skylar Champion.

"She has the biggest sugar tooth," Champion said of 6-year old daughter Katherine. "This is a nice alternative to get more of a healthier choice than the regular frozen yogurt or ice cream with the gummy worms all on top."

Katherine is all about one thing this summer: Snowbaby.

"Imagine if a snow cone and an ice cream had a baby--- it'd be a snowbaby," explained owner Chrissy Kuo.

Snowbaby is a twist on Taiwanese shaved ice.

"So Taiwanese shaved ice is essentially a block of the actual ingredients," Kuo said. "We shave that into thin ribbon layer sheets to give you that texture of freshly fallen snow."

The summer treat isn't as heavy or full of calories as regular ice cream.

"I'm a mom," Kuo told us. "I was raised in the 90s. I grew up on Cheetos and Doritos, so I get it. Our processed food is sort of part of our culture now."

After having her own kids, Kuo noticed herself becoming more particular about what she put into their bodies than even her own. She wanted to avoid processed food and artificial flavors. She read labels and researched ingredients when it came to their snacks, and that's why Snowbaby was created.

So, what exactly makes it healthier?

"We don't use any type of powders, milk powders, artificial coloring, flavoring or sweeteners," Kuo explained. "Our strawberry is made up of ground strawberries. It's not made of flavoring or anything else. Our vanilla is made from natural extracts and the seeds from a vanilla bean pod. Our chocolate is made from 100 percent cacao powder."

The point is-- it's real food. Kuo creates the flavors herself and even has an option for the lactose intolerant.

"We actually do have a non-dairy coconut flavor made of pure organic coconut milk and it's so good... it's my favorite," Kuo stated.

As for toppings?

"If you come here the kids are super excited about the colorful "natural" sprinkles... and they don't ask for M&Ms," Kuo said.

Katherine is a fan of chocolate with sprinkles. What she doesn't know is the color comes from natural ingredients like turmeric.

"It's kind of like tricking them into eating healthy," said Laura Andrade, mom of 8-year old Lila.

And what the kids don't know won't hurt them.

"I think the coconut is my favorite topping," Lila said.

"Sometimes, you've just got to give up and let them be kids," Champion said. "But if it's right here in front of you, it's a win-win for everybody!"
