For nearly 50 years, 'snow' in Bedford has helped beat the heat

Bedford Snoball has built a reputation as one of summer's sweetest spots.

BEDFORD, Texas — Every year, when it gets to be 100 degrees outside, people complain it’s too hot. Perhaps what those folks need is snow.

For nearly 50 years, one of the best places to escape the heat has been Bedford Snoball.

“Exactly,” said owner Steve York. “Anything cold, we tell them is good right now.”

York’s in-laws opened Bedford Snoball in 1976 before he and his wife, Janelle, took over 23 years ago.

Every summer, customers keep coming back.

“If they were open during the winter, I’d probably still come here in the winter,” said customer Eva Chowdhury.

“I felt like I should buy some stock options in it because I was eating snow cones so often,” said customer Isaac Washington.

Customers could eat one almost every day and still not try every snoball. From syrups to candy and whipped cream to ice cream, they’ve got nearly 200 flavor combinations.

“What we’re known for best is our jubilees,” York said.

A jubilee has real fruit blended with the syrup. Flavors typically change depending on what fruit is in-season.

However, the sweetest thing they offer is themselves.

Many customers rave about the Yorks and how they make everyone feel like family.

“I love mom and pops, but I absolutely love mom and pops where I feel like it’s my mom and pop,” Washington said. “That’s kind of the vibe they give you here.”

“So many of our customers have become friends over the years and that’s just what makes it work,” said York.

Bedford Snoball is open every day except Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and only accepts cash.
