Brave Combo, the Denton-based "nuclear polka" band that's been chugging along for more than 35 years, is going to sound — and look — a little bit different.
Jeffrey Barnes, who has played sax, clarinet and other instruments with the group since joining 31 years ago, announced Monday on his Facebook page that he has left the band.
"I, Jeffrey Barnes, being of (arguably) sound mind and (63 year old) body, have embarked upon a journey of self-discovery this year," Barnes wrote. "I have left Brave Combo, my job of 31 years -- literally 1/2 of my life(!) -- and cast my fate to the wind. I apologize to any disappointed fans, but it's necessary."
Barnes, who was also a big visual part of the band with his burly physique, floppy hats and offbeat fashion sense, added:
"This was easier in my 20s, when my needs were few and I was single, but now I have a darling little wife, a mortgage, bills, etc. I was going to say also that, back then, my energy was boundless, but that hasn't really changed: Momentum is inertia too -- a body in motion wants to stay in motion, and so will mine until entropy finally brings it down."
