1) Who are you? Hey Y'all! My name is Colleen. Some people call me Colls. I like lenticular clouds and most nights I fall asleep to a rain sound machine. When I'm not the woman in front of the weather wall, I'm a wife to my college sweetheart, a faithful follower of Christ, and a true Nickelodeon Kid (got slimed when I was 10). You can also find me chasing around 3 furry rescue babies (2 dogs + a cat). I'm addicted to adrenaline, ice cream, & kale. My "rebel side" includes 5 ear piercings, hot sauce on everything, and night owl tendencies.
Though a native Georgia Peach, I got to Texas as quickly as I could! I attended Georgia Tech studying at their School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. I graduated first in my meteorology class with a Bachelors Degree in Meteorology and a Minor in Business. I found my passion for broadcast meteorology during an internship at WSB-TV in Atlanta.
After spending my early television days at my first job in Palm Springs, CA I made the move to Dallas in 2010. North Texas is now my home away from home. It’s been a whirlwind since joining the WFAA team. I’ve been in the middle of some of the most devastating weather events: Super Bowl Snowstorm 2011, Joplin Tornado 2011, Vilonia Tornado 2014, Moore Tornado 2015, and Hurricane Harvey 2017. I’ve chased storms, flown with the Blue Angels, swam with sharks, and even represented North Texas filling in on Good Morning America.
2) What are your interests? Well, of course, I love the weather! I especially love sharing my passion with North Texas students. Some of my favorite mornings are spent at local schools talking about the wonders of weather and the basics of severe weather safety. I’m also letting my geek flag fly with my Facebook Live Series: Nerd Out with Colleen. Each month we explore the crazy realm of science at the Perot Museum.
In my free time, I can be found not in front of the camera – but behind it – taking way too many pictures! Not only do I love photography, but I can’t stop traveling the world! A new passport stamp is one of my favorite things. Back at home, you can find me laying in the hammock, drinking a good cup of coffee, diving into God’s word, and spending time with family and friends. I also like to dabble with my guitar, plan my next “Colloween” – I mean Halloween – costume, and break a sweat. Over the years, I’ve developed a knack for pounding the pavement – completing 3 half marathons.
No matter how old I get, I’m still kind of a thrill seeker. I’ve conquered the world’s highest bungee jump in Switzerland…what’s next?
3) What do you like about working at WFAA? The people. My coworkers are amazing. I work alongside some of the best in the business. Everyone is here because they have a passion for their trade – and it shows! Not only do we work together to bring you the best newscasts in DFW, but we are also friends who care about each other personally and professionally. You can always count on everyone. Not only do we care, but we have cultivated an authentic community. I love that. I also love that WFAA isn’t scared to be bold, original, and dynamic! We aren’t hanging out with the past – we’re looking toward the future. It’s the WFAA Way and I love that.
4) What's one thing people would be surprised to learn about you? If I wasn’t a meteorologist, I would be a Hip-hop backup dancer! I’m totally serious. Dreams never expire so I’m still waiting for my music video opportunity. See you on MTV. Oops – just showed my age!
