Solar Impulse is the world's first solar-powered plane that can fly both day and night. It cross-country trip included a stop at DFW Airport where it landed just after 1am early Thursday morning. It's approach was very slow and quiet to those watching it on the ground. This leg of the trip from Phoenix to Dallas broke a world record for distance flown in a solar-powered aircraft. More info can be found at www.solarimpulse.com

Tucker Hill, a traditional neighborhood development in McKinney, will open its doors -- or should we say courtyards -- to the community on Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for “Courtyards, Concerts & Cars.” This new event will feature six resident courtyards on tour, plus model homes, along with a free “old meets new” car show hosted by Pat Lobb’s Toyota of McKinney and a free outdoor concert featuring Counterfeit Radio.

Paid admission is only required for the Courtyard Garden Tour. Guests will enjoy not only the beauty of themed gardens like a Texas Parks & Wildlife certified “Texas Wildscapes” or “Water Feature Focus,” but can also interact with Collin County Master Gardeners available in each garden to answer questions. In addition, each garden will either feature live musicians and/or tasty treats for sampling.

The free car show and outdoor concert, which will be set up along Percy Drive and make use of the Lawn Chair Amphitheatre, will take place simultaneously with the garden tour and will be free for all who attend. Pat Lobb’s Toyota of McKinney will be grilling and giving away free hamburgers and hot dogs while supplies last and the Tucker Hill Hospitality Committee will raise funds for their activities by selling drinks, chips and home-baked goodies.

Advanced, discounted tickets to view the courtyards are $8 if purchased on-line through the McKinney Performing Arts Center (beneficiary) website or at the Tucker Hill Development Office. Same day admission will be $10, cash or check only. This is a rain-or-shine event! For more details, go to www.tuckerhilltx.com!

Eight Dallas-area high school debate teams recently participated in the First Annual Old Parkland Debate Tournament on the campus of Old Parkland. Debate teams from Coppell, Flower Mound, Greenhill, Hockaday, Parish Episcopal, Plano, Plano West and St. Mark’s high schools debated whether the benefits of post-9/11 security measures outweigh the harms to personal freedom.

Parish Episcopal School seniors, Cyrus Ghaznavi and Sahil Vanjani, won first place in the tournament edging past St. Mark’s School’s team, Meyer Thalheimer and Zachary Burdette, in a close, 3-2 decision. Parish Episcopal’s team member, Cyrus Ghaznavi, was also named top individual speaker.

The two-day, eight-round tournament was held at the beautifully restored Old Parkland campus and sponsored by Crow Holdings. Each member of the first place team received $2,000 and $1,000 was awarded to Parish Episcopal. For placing second, the St. Mark’s School team members each received $1,000 with an additional $1,000 donation for their school. All other schools each received $500 for participating in the tournament.
