This looks like a late Christmas story or a line from the Twelve Days of Christmas, but it is really not. They may have just finished a series of concerts of Christmas music, but now are planning music for the rest of the winter months. These high school musicians, currently five in number, are giving their personal time and talents to devise, practice and perform orchestral concerts for our elderly friends who reside in retirement and assisted living arrangements.
Maranda was the first. She applied to be a Music Intern for Rountree Care Services at the beginning of October, and performed her first concert as a solo double bassist playing classical music at Emeritus at Summer Ridge Assisted Living October 24. As she was playing, Joanie and Maria looked on. They had just submitted their applications to the Music Internship Program and wanted to see how it worked. Maranda the bassist, Joanie the violinist, and Maria the cellist could perform as a string trio or they could perform as soloists and duets in other ways.
Maranda quickly showed her leadership skills. In her school orchestra she talked to other students encouraging them to participate. The result was Ana, playing viola, and Michelle, playing violin, applied to the program at the end of November. This provided a well-balanced, five member string ensemble. With the Christmas season approaching and Maranda directing the practices, the Rountree Care Services Interns found the music and script of an old Christmas Program that filled the bill!
These five young women have donated their time, efforts and tremendous talents to practice and perform this Christmas Program at Willowbend Nursing and Rehab Center, Emeritus at Summer Ridge Assisted Living, Waterford Independent Living, and Town East Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. The program was a great success and was received with obvious appreciation, but now Christmas is over and the Spring Semester is starting.
The new goal that takes more time and effort is for Maranda and the Interns to find new music to be appreciated, to practice it and be prepared for the upcoming performances at additional residences. The responsibility of scheduling the performances into the residence homes falls to father and son Bob and Jeff Rountree who also will write letters of recommendation for future use of each of these volunteers, documenting their time and performances in community service. This may not be a Christmas story, but it certainly is a story of giving.
