Eliana Wade is a second grader here at Hartman Elementary School. When her PE teacher told the kids about Hoops for Heart and our plans to raise money for the American Heart Association, she immediately began making plans. Because of generous donations to the American Heart Association, her brother’s life has been touched. Xander Wade, a homebound student at Hartman has 6 congenital heart defects and has had 4 open heart surgeries.
Eliana’s mom, Marsha, told me that Eliana jumped into the car and matter-of-factly informed her mother that she was going to “raise everyone’s awareness of kids like her brother.” She promptly informed her mother that she had set her fundraising goal at $1000. That evening, Eliana designed shirts for her brother, mother, and herself to wear while collecting funds. She also wrote her own advertising script to post on her AHA website and to share with friends and family. She asked her brother’s nurses, her church family, and close friends to contribute to her goal in return for folding laundry and doing other similar chores. Before the end of the week, Eliana had reached her goal and beyond! She’s now reaching to collect $2000 before February 15.
