RICHARDSON — A masked bank robber who may be responsible for more than half a dozen area holdups opened fire on a Richardson police officer late Saturday morning.

Police have identified the suspect as Steven Ray Milam, 44.

Investigators said police were alerted to the crime at the BBVA Compass Bank branch at Campbell and Plano roads at 11:44 a.m.

The first police unit to arrive received gunfire from the suspect. While there were at least three bullet holes in a squad car, no one was injured.

The suspect ran into an adjoining neighborhood and was still at large at last report.

A weapon, a mask and some cash were recovered, but the suspect remained at large Saturday evening.

Richardson police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Perlich said witness accounts and bank surveillance video links the gunman to the "Handsome Guy" bandit, named for the mask that he wears as a disguise. On Saturday night, detectives said they were looking for Steven Ray Milam in connection with the shooting. He will face an attempted capital murder charge.

Dallas police provided a search dog and a helicopter to assist in the search for the gunman, which was suspended at dusk.

Call Richardson police at 972-744-4801 or your local police agency if you have any information about the suspect.
