The Stars need to shuffle their defensive pairings – here's why

The Dallas Stars had hoped Esa Lindell would the yin to John Klingberg’s yang, but a quick look at some of the defensive pair’s stats will tell you he hasn’t been.

In fact, among 16 regular defensive pairings on the Stars’ roster, Klingberg and Lindell rank fifth worst in adjusted expected goal percentage -- a predictor of actual goals over the course of a season.

So what’s the solution? If adjusted expected goals is your litmus test, the right course of action might just be to slot Patrik Nemeth alongside Klingberg. That pairing has resulted in almost 11 percent more adjusted expected goals.
