A Fort Worth police officer was hospitalized after being struck by a car on a downtown freeway Tuesday night.

Police said the officer, whose name was not given, had been dispatched to investigate a report of a couch on the ramp from westbound Interstate 30 to southbound I-35W around 10 p.m. The victim was hit as cones and flares were being deployed to alert motorists to the debris.

The 13-year veteran officer was taken to Texas Health Fort Worth Hospital for treatment of a broken leg, cuts and bruises. The officer was reported to be in stable condition early Wednesday.

Investigators said the driver who hit the officer stopped to render aid and that charges are unlikely.

A Fort Worth officer was hit by a car and suffered a broken leg.
