MURPHY -- Homeowners in the city of Murphy are experiencing real growing pains as the road in front of them is under heavy construction.

TxDOT is in the process of widening Murphy Road near FM 544 from two lanes to six lanes. But in the process, it has forced headaches for residents living along it.

"I loved it when it was a little more country," said Jane Pillars, who lives in one of the seven affected homes.

"It's the pain before the gain," said Jaclyn McGuinness, who is excited about the growth. "I think Planning and Zoning needs to take a look at this other side of the street and decide what they want here."

But for these residents, it's a pain that has lasted several weeks.

"You can't get in and you can't get out," McGuinness said.

Neighbors have complained about blocked access to driveways. Pillars said even the mailman stopped coming for a while. She said she didn't know that the post office was holding their mail.

"My struggle is, they're not communicating with us as they go along," Pillars said.

News 8 spoke with TxDOT. A rep told us "TxDOT is aware of the access issues for these residents, and the Collin County area engineer is out there regularly to monitor access for residents."

They recommends families having issues call the Collin County area office at 972-542-2345.

Pillars admits in the last couple days, the crews have been better about communicating. But she still feels in the dark as the construction project and access changes from day to day.
