The 35-year-old mother shot in the thigh while pushing her 1-year-old son in a stroller is now recovering back at home.
HOUSTON -- A 35-year-old mother shot in the thigh while pushing her 1-year-old son in a stroller is now recovering back at home.
She was walking with her child about a mile from her house in The Heights at Harvard and 13th Street in Houston around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Her husband asked that KHOU not release their identities for his family's protection.
He was in California on business when he got the gut-wrenching call from his wife. She had just been loaded into an ambulance.
"It was definitely a scary, scary day," said the woman's husband. "We're blessed. It could have been a lot worse."
It started with an armed robbery at the nearby Paradise Smoke Shop in the 1300 block of Yale. Two thieves reportedly held a gun to someone's head before taking off with cash and other items.
The criminals sped off and a smoke shop employee chased after them.
Police say one of the robbers began popping off shots toward the employee's car. That's when one of the bullets hit the mother.
Witnesses said the bullet narrowly missed her child.
"It went real fast, real quick. [She was like] wow, what happened," explained her husband. "The neighbors there responded quickly and gave help to her and my son."
The woman's husband got on the first flight back to Houston.
He said his wife is going to be okay. He wasn't sure if she'll be walking around the neighborhood with their son anymore.
"It's really early," he said. "We love our neighborhood. We love our neighbors. We've been glad to live here in the Heights."
Houston Police have not released descriptions of the suspects.
There is surveillance video from the smoke shop, but it has not been released.
