FORTWORTH - A burglary suspect is dead and an officer wounded in a shootout Wednesday morning in a neighborhood located in the 6400 block of Brentwood Dr., said Chief Jeff Halstead, with the Fort Worth Police Department.

The officer, identified as Ofc. Marty Stone, was responding to a hold up alarm that came in just before 6:30 a.m. at a fast-food restaurant when he spotted a suspicious man, who took off on foot.

The suspect fled into a nearby home. At some point he exited the home and pulled out a gun, firing several shots, as the officer asked him to get on the ground. The officer was struck in the leg and returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.

Stone, an eight-year veteran with the Fort Worth Police Department and five-year veteran of the U.S. Army, was able tend to his wound and make a tourniquet for his leg using a newly issued medical kit. Both men were transported to a nearby hospital, where the suspect was later pronounced dead. The officer is in good condition.

Stone was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.
