FORTWORTH - Born on Aug. 5 at the Fort Worth Zoo, "Bowie" is the newest baby elephant on the block following the birth of "Belle," the second elephant ever born at the zoo.

Standing at 37.5 inches tall and weighing nearly 230 pounds, the Asian elephant was named after Texas legend Jim Bowie. The mother is the zoo's 14-year-old Asian Elephant "Bluebonnet," the first elephant born at the zoo to "Rasha."

"The initial bonding between an elephant calf and its mother is vital to a successful rearing," read a statement released by the zoo. "As the calf gets acclimated to his surroundings, he will be viewable at various times during the day. Those times will be dictated by his activity level."

Bowie's birth made him the third elephant born at the zoo. Belle, his aunt, was born to Bluebonnet's mother "Rasha" 30 days before in July.
