Cayuga is a tiny town in east Texas, located off Highway 287 between Corsicana and Palestine. It's about 90 miles southeast of Dallas, and to be honest, I'd never heard of the town until this past fall. That's when their football team, led by Traylon Shead and Malcolm Kennedy won the class 1A state championship. Shead is now the all-time leader in touchdowns scored by a high school football player -- he's going to the University of Texas. Kennedy played quarterback, but will probably be a defensive back when he goes to Texas A&M.

We did a story on Cayuga in late December, when their basketball season started, which it didn't do until the football season ended. So on Monday, December 28th, the basketball team met for the first time that morning for a brief practice before driving to Fort Worth for the Whataburger tournament. Despite a 0-0 record at that time, Cayuga was the #1 ranked team in class 1A. They lost their first game to Argyle, and their second game, and then won 22 straight and the 1A state championship.

Interestingly, the baseball team has the exact same record right now that the basketball team had -- 22-2. They are still a few games away from winning a state championship, and their coach Greg Branch actually said the team is probably one year away from peaking -- the Wildcats have only one senior starter, Billy Duncan. But if Cayuga does win the state title in baseball, they will become the first Texas high school to win state championships in the three major boys sports, in the same school year. Already Cayuga is the only 1A school to win football and basketball in the same season. It's such a neat story, no matter how it ends for the baseball team, and both Branch and head basketball coach (and new athletic director)Greg Jenkins say they are lucky and blessed with a group of talented kids. It's something they're not taking for granted.

The Wildcats begin their best-of-three series Thursday against Lovelady. Win that, and they play next week in the Regional Finals. The state tournament begins in Round Rock on June 9th.
