DALLAS - A group of Dallas girls is putting their best foot forward when it comes to living a healthy life. It's a physical, mental and emotional workout.

The girls are learning some great life lessons one step at a time.

It taught me how to be nice to my friends, said Alexis Shields, 9. And when someone is gossiping that you can't tell them something that you're really not supposed to say to other people because it can really hurt their feelings.

The Girls On The Run, a YMCA program, educates and builds self confidence in more than 300 young girls in grades third through fifth through a non-competitive running program. Twice a week for 10 weeks, the girls focused on weekly topics such as proper nutrition, bullying and gossiping, mixed in with some light running.

The program culminated with a 5K run on May 1.

It combines the training for the 5K with lessons about their health, said Janette Steinheimer, executive director. From their personal health to their relationship health to their involvement in the community to where they know they can have an impact and they can make a difference in the community.

Girls On The Run is looking for volunteers for the fall.
